So I have been thinking about food a lot lately. This isn’t particularly unusual, as I love food, but I would really like to know that what I am feeding my family is actually good food. What do our bodies need?
I have been doing a lot of reading up on different diets, and I keep coming back to Paleo. I think this is ideally what I would like to be aiming for.
So what is Paleo? Paleo focuses on eating fresh, whole foods, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Foods that are avoided are all grains, legumes (including soy and peanuts), dairy (except butter, ghee and heavy cream), modern vegetable oils (like safflower and canola), and processed foods, as well as avoiding excessive salt, refined sugars and too many carbohydrates.
So far we have cut down on many of the “non-paleo” foods, but have not managed to cut them right out. It’s not easy with a husband and small children, especially if they are not 100% on board with it! I figured that as long as we are giving it a go and cutting down on the bad stuff, that’s got to be a step in the right direction.
