D is for Density

Today we looked at the density of different liquids.

Here is an ordinary glass of water:

We want to see if these other liquids are more or less dense than the water. If they are more dense they will sink, if they are less dense they will float!

First up was the agave syrup. This sank very quickly, so definitely more dense than water.

Next we added sesame oil. This floated on top of the water, so it is less dense than water.

Some nice pink washing up liquid. This sank through the water, but sat on top of the syrup. This shows it is more dense than water, but less dense than syrup.

Ketchup…. I’m not actually sure if this is a liquid or not, but we added it anyway! It sank through the water and washing up liquid, and stopped when it got to the syrup. This was more dense than water and washing up liquid, but less dense than syrup again.

Last up was some green food colouring, just to see what happened. The droplets went down into the water, but stayed where they were. Most of it settled near the top of the water. We didn’t stir it, and it didn’t mix through the water by itself. The food colouring is obviously a slightly different density to the water, but not by much. It is a very pretty result!
