F is for Friction

Today we were looking at Friction. Friction is a force that works against an object that is moving.

First, we rubbed our hands together quickly, to see what happened.

After a short while they began to feel warm. The friction of our hands rubbing together was creating heat.

Next we made some rocket sliders to see how we can use friction.

These are the lovely rockets.

On the back of each rocket there are two pieces of straw stuck on at an angle.

A long piece of string was threaded though the straws, so that each end was at the bottom of the rocket, and a loop at the top.

Hang the loop over something fairly high up and hold onto each end of the string, holding your hands apart. As you pull down on the string on one side, the straw grips to the string on the other side and moves upwards. Pull down on the string on the other side and the rocket will move up again. Once you get the hang of it, the rockets move really fast!
