This was a really fun and simple way to look at classification with younger children. Even my 3 year old loved it!
Start off by collecting together lots of different objects (making sure there are similarities between some of them).
This was our collection:
I put them on the table and invited the children to sort them out. I didn’t suggest how, other than to suggest some things might have something in common.
First they sorted everything into ‘types of object’.
We talked about why they had put these thing together.
I then asked if they could sort out the objects differently.
They sorted the lego by size and shape, and the buttons by size, and then by colour.
Next they put all the objects back together and sorted the whole lot by colour.
