B is for Bicarbonate of soda and Bubbles

As it is half term this week, lots of our regular activities aren’t on. I decided we should do some of the science experiments that I have had in mind to do for a while.

This is a fun and simple experiment that can easily be done at home, and lets the kids get involved too!

All you need is vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. We also used washing up liquid and food colouring to make things a bit more interesting!

We placed two cups into a baking dish. One cup just has vinegar in, the other also has some washing up liquid.

Here goes the bicarbonate of soda into the vinegar….lots of bubbles!! They rose up very quickly.

The bubbles flow over the top of the cup, and then eventually die down.

Here goes the second cup, with the washing up liquid in it….

Exciting stuff! This time the reaction was much slower, but produced lots of foam that stayed after the reaction had finished.

We tried it again with the washing up liquid, and also added green food colouring. Lots more foam!!

The kids really enjoyed doing this experiment. They love bubbles and they were pleased to be able to get involved.
